22082012 Berthier 1907-15 The Berthier was initially designed for cavalry troops because of the difficulty of loading a Lebel tube magazine while riding. The rifles were cut down to a medium length and the front band and nosecap were replaced with leftover spares from 1905 Mauser carbines with no provision for bayonets. Berthier simply married this magazine system to a modified reduced-size M le 1874 m80 receiver and took much of his bolt design from the current Lebel M le 1886.
